respect yourself ... respect others ... respect the campus

           

Why a respect campaign? As an institution of higher education, it is important that we educate ourselves to live happily and successfully in our diverse world. Through the respect campaign, students will be able to learn within a laboratory of what it means to respect themselves, respect others, respect the campus, and operate their daily activities in a community that is civil, polite, and understanding of everyone.

What is respect? To hold in esteem or honor; to show regard or consideration for; to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with; esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person.

What is civility? Courtesy; politeness, a polite action or expression.

What is disruption? To interrupt or impede any progress; cause confusion.

What is bias? A personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment. (Merriam-Webster) Example
What is a hate crime?  A crime that is motivated by hate, prejudice or intolerance of someone’s religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Example

  How will the university respond to a hate crime or bias situation?  Any crime should immediately be reported to Public Safety. Discrimination or harassment in violation of the WSU non-discrimination/ affirmative action policy or sexual harassment statute may also be reported to the Office of Equal Opportunity.      
           
  What are the benefits of a diverse community? "A racially and ethnically diverse university student body has far-ranging and significant benefits for all students... Continued  (Gurin 1999)"
