Spirit Rock

The “Spirit Rock” is located across from the Undergraduate Library near the Linsell House, on Gullen Mall.

The Dean of Students Office oversees the reservations of the Spirit Rock. Email getinvolved@wayne.edu for questions or concerns.

Reservations

Reservations can be made at least seven (7) days in advance by a Registered Student Organization (RSO) or university department via SignUpGenius. For RSOs, the reservation must have approval of an officer listed on the organization's roster in the Get Involved platform.

Reserve the Spirit Rock

Each reservation duration lasts 48 hours. The reservation begins at 9:01 p.m. the day before the reservation in EMS (example: ABC organization reserved the rock for Oct. 13, they can start painting the rock at 9:01 p.m. on Oct. 12. The reservation ends at 9 p.m. Oct. 14.). Painting may take place from 9:01 p.m. to midnight, and 7 a.m. through midnight the day of the reservation. No painting may occur between midnight and 7 a.m.

Multiple reservations in a row will not be permitted. Groups are limited to one reservation per calendar month.

If the rock is reserved, it must be repainted. Groups cannot reserve the rock simply to extend the duration of an existing message.

The reservation is to paint the rock; not to gather as an organization. If a department or organization would like to host an event as the rock is being painted, a separate reservation for Gullen Mall needs to be made.

Policy

The rock may only be painted by organizations registered through the Dean of Students Office or university units.

The surrounding areas (trees, grass, statues, etc.) may NOT be painted or decorated. If there are any signs of paint damage to these areas, the organization/office may be held financially responsible for the cleanup and repair of the site.

Those painting the rock will ensure that the area is left in a clean condition. They will remove all materials and litter from the site and properly dispose of all paint.

The rock will be painted gray between reservations unless there are back-to-back reservations.

Other groups will not interfere with those painting the rock. People have the right to paint the rock without being bothered, harassed or demeaned.

Interfering with the freedoms of speech and expression is prohibited (i.e. harassment, intimidation, bullying, obstruction, defacing, physical or verbal abuse, etc.).

Tagging letters, names, or symbols over other groups’ paintings is prohibited.

No canopy or tent may cover or obscure the rock.

Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at the rock. This includes the use of any amplified sound.

Paintings must not contain any language or content that constitutes a true threat, i.e., a statement meant to frighten people into believing they will be seriously harmed.

Violations

Organizations are expected to respect each other and to enjoy the tradition of painting the rock. An organization may be held responsible for the actions of its members if deemed as inappropriate and not in accordance with this policy. A member is defined as anyone associated with an organization including, but not limited to, active, current, initiated, alumni, transfer, inactive, intercollegiate, associate, and/or new members.

Failure to cancel a reservation at least one full business day prior to the scheduled reservation or failure to paint the rock during your designated time may result in refused future reservation requests for the remainder of the semester in which the infractions occur and upon review of either the Dean of Students Office advisor or the director of the Student Center.

Violations of this policy may result in Student Code of Conduct charges for the individuals and/or the groups.
