Fraternity and Sorority Life
Fraternities and sororities are organizations that share common interests, values or areas of academic study. Wayne State University has chapters for 27 national social fraternities and sororities, and many other professional and independent Greek-letter organizations.
- Six social fraternities, members of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (IFC)
- Eight multicultural fraternities (three) and sororities (five), governed by the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
- Four social sororities, governed by the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC)
- Nine historically African-American fraternities (five) and sororities (four), governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
Why join a fraternity or sorority?
Fraternities and sororities are organizations that provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, meet new people that may have similar values, interests or academic programs, give back to communities and organizations through service and philanthropy, and strive towards academic success in coursework. It is also an excellent way to connect with alumni to network for possible opportunities or employment in the future.
Each organization follows their own timeline for taking in new members, which generally begins the first day of classes in the fall and winter semesters. Organizations do not take new members during the spring/summer semesters. Dues and fees also vary by organization, and are based on factors dictated by each fraternity/sorority national organization.
